Paso Peruanos are horses with amazing contradictions:
- full of fire and easy to handle
- robust and elegant
- proud and with high human affinity
- sensitive and with strong nerves
Their genetically-fixed Special Gates are called “Paso Llano” and “Sobreandando”. Thanks to these low energy consuming 4 beat gates and the very smooth riding they are the first choice for trail riding and gaited horse endurance riding. As the name indicates, Peru is the country of origin of the Paso Peruano.
The initial breeding stock however are the strong horses that the Spanish Conquerers brought with them during the conquest of the Americas.
Based on these old-Spanish and North African horses the Paso Peruano developed since 1534 as a unique breed.
Their purpose was to allow the owners of very large areas to inspect their property during several day-long rides; the horses therefore needed to be persevering, comfortable and easy. Additionally the Paso Peruano became a status symbol and needed to show Aristocracy, Beauty and Exuberance.
The first Pasos were imported into Europe by Jean Claude Dysli in 1973; today there are about 700 Paso Peruano in Europe.
